Laundry Room Ideas

A well–organized laundry room is half the battle towards easing the laundry blues. We can make the tasks of collecting, sorting and washing by being well set up from the start.

Laundry Sorter

Minimize the time you spend sorting the family laundry by providing each child with washer–dryer–safe mesh bags in each of their rooms, one for darks and one for lights. Show your kids how to use their laundry sorter by putting their dirty clothes into the appropriate bag. Make the task really easy for very young children by purchasing white mesh bags for the whites and a bright colour (or multi colour if you can find it) for the darks.

Washing and Drying

On laundry day, the children can be asked to bring their own mesh bags to the laundry room where they can be washed and dried right in the bag! You could also set up laundry hampers or laundry baskets in the laundry room (one for light, one for darks and one for hand-washables). Clothes can be placed in these bins until ready for washing. Keep a small plastic container handy for easy hand washing. Be sure to remove clothes from the dryer promptly to discourage wrinkling and decrease the amount of time you spend on ironing.

Ironing

Let’s be honest. Ironing is a pain and it takes forever. Buy clothes that don’t require ironing whenever possible so you can avoid spending valuable time on this chore!

Folding

Folding space is often at a premium in many laundry rooms. If you are using the mesh bags for presorting, an added bonus is that older children can be taught how to fold their own laundry in their room, after the bag is returned to them. Young children won’t be able to accomplish this but will often find it quite fun to do the easier tasks like put socks and underwear back in the drawer and fold easy items like washcloths all by themselves.

Keep it Tidy

Be sure to discourage clutter in the laundry room by picking up and doing a mini-clean frequently so you aren’t faced with a major clean up as WELL as the laundry. Make sure there is a garbage can in the room. Use these laundry room ideas to help make the sometimes-dreaded chore not quite so time consuming!
